Barrel Racing Saddles
Barrel racing is a spectator sport that began when women wanted to compete in an event at rodeos that was fair
to them. They placed 55 gallon barrels in a specific pattern that included one right turn and two left turns.
They raced horses around the barrels to see who could do it the fastest. Today it is a popular competition that
takes practice and a great deal of concentration.
A barrel racing saddle is one of the most important pieces of equipment used by a barrel racer. If the saddle
does not fit the horse correctly both the rider and the horse can get painfully tender.
A barrel racing saddle should be light weight. It should also have a high horn and a high cantle which keeps the
rider steadily in the saddle while doing the turns. Try to get one with stirrups that are forward hung because it
will enable the rider to keep the feet under their body when competing.
Some barrel racing saddles are plain and simple but most are rather ornate with tooling and silver
embellishment. The more simple saddles are more reasonable in price and the beautifully embellished saddles can
cost upwards to several thousand dollars.
It pays to have a beautiful saddle when you start to win races but always make sure it is the right fit for
yourself and your horse.
Circle Y has a beautiful barrel racing saddle called the Kelly Kaminski Big Dreams. Tooling is in the fashion of
a floral basket and there is a beautiful silver star that decorates the saddle. That isn't all though. The saddle
has Swarovski crystals in the trim and when the sun hits them the saddle sparkles. This saddle is adjustable so it
fits different horses. The horn is braided rawhide and the cantle is silver. It runs about USD $2000.
Marlene offers a great barrel racing saddle with a butterfly skirt that is cut out under the legs of the rider
giving closer contact to the horse. This saddle allows the rider to keep balance and decrease weight. This saddle
is equipped with Marlene's Effx Saddle tree that changes fit so it can fit to more than one horse.
The saddle fits so well it does not slip and the ride is smooth. The saddle is less restrictive for both the
horse and rider. It boasts tooling in a floral acorn pattern. The cantle is silver lace with an overlay of rawhide.
There are several silver conchos as ornamentation on the saddle. It costs a little less at around USD $1970.00.
Another great barrel racing saddle is the Sherry Cervi Barrel Racer. This saddle follows the curves of the
horse's back while the seat is narrow and allows the rider to sit close to the horse for better guidance. This
barrel racing saddle has in-skirt rigging that allows it to be adjusted to all horses.
The seat is black suede with beautiful tooling. The stirrups are aluminum but engraved to give it some punch.
The saddle is ornamented with snowflake concho and it costs about USD $2100.
These are just a few samples of barrel racing saddles that are available on the market today. You can purchase
them new and you can usually find a good barrel racing saddle that has been used but still in great condition for a
fraction of the price. Just make sure the saddle fits well so that you can ride with security and accuracy.
